The Grand Touring Injection is set to receive a special edition version.

The first Golf GTI is almost half a century old now. This iconic performance hatchback from Wolfsburg was launched back in 1976, yet Volkswagen plans to mark this significant occasion before reaching the year 2026. They aim to unveil a fresh version of the spirited small car in June, coinciding with the ADAC 24-hour endurance event held at the Nürburgring. Information regarding the commemorative edition remains largely undisclosed; however, everyone knows it will be described as a “sporty special model.”

Given no details from Volkswagen regarding the vehicle, our only option is to speculate. The updated version of the Golf GTI Mk8 has already been introduced.

With 296 horsepower, which is 35 HP greater than the typical GTI version. This special edition comes with an enhanced 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters), representing an increase of 22 lb-ft (30 Nm) over the basic GTI model. The details about whether this new limited-edition variant will follow the specifications of the non-US-market Clubsport or stick to the conventional design remain uncertain.

Suppose it starts off as a Clubsport and then scales up; perhaps additional horsepower will follow suit? The TSI engine likely has untapped potential since it can generate 328 hp in the current model.

Even so, the Golf GTI will surely maintain its front-wheel-drive configuration. This car would become one of the strongest front-wheel-drive vehicles around but would still fall short of the Ford Focus RS500’s power output (345 hp).

Last year, VW phased out the manual transmission for the updated Golf GTI, though we might still see a clutch pedal option down the line; however, that seems like hopeful speculation right now. Regardless of what happens, expect it to come with a hefty price tag. The Clubsport model already starts at around €50,000 in Germany. Within its home country, you could end up paying upwards of €60,000 for the R Black Edition variant of the Golf. At present, VW has not dismissed the possibility of producing one.

, which would cost even more.

Even though VW is collaborating with Rivian on developing a ninth-generation, all-electric Golf, the present model will continue to be produced. The firm has not dismissed the possibility of retaining the current version.
